Pumpkins & Birthday Cake — Weekend Highlights

Oh 27. When the heck did I get so close to 30?? (Note to self, come back and edit out the ages in three years so no one can do the math.) You know how when you’re younger and you look at your teachers, parents, and just about everyone who’s older than you and think, “that’s an adult.” Well I’ve hit that age, and some of my friends are even teachers and parents now but do I really feel like an “adult”?

It might be the fact that I’m 5’2” and never quite lost my chipmunk cheeks or that I still get questioned when I show my ID—I’m sure in another 10 years, I’ll be grateful for the skepticism.

I thought I’d get that feeling of being an adult when I graduated from college…but I kind of just felt like a small fry trying to navigate life after school. I thought maybe I’d feel it when I finished grad school…but then I got the feeling that I really needed to get it together this time. And I REALLY thought I’d feel it when I finally landed a real job and moved out into a house of my own…but now I’m seeing that adulthood looks different once you’re actually in the middle of it. And maybe the fun-loving goof, who’s trying to piece everything together and compose herself enough to make it all appear convincing, lives on inside, even in adulthood.

So instead of dreading that I’m another year older—something I’m more inclined toward the closer I approach 30—time to celebrate another year of life with people I enjoy!

To be honest, it’s nice to be celebrated, but I sort of dread being the center of attention (a constant obstacle in trying to start a blog…or have any presence on social media). So, a low-key day catered to the things I like was perfect for me.

I started the morning having breakfast with my mom (her birthday happens to be the day after mine). I LOVE breakfast foods, especially when they come stacked high with every type of fruit. So of course, I opted to go to the Waffle Stop for an order of the Very Berry Medley, a mix of strawberries & blackberries on top of a pearl sugar waffle. A little sugar rush to power me into my birthday!

There also happened to be a farmer’s market going on right outside the restaurant, so we strolled on through, and my sweet momma let me pick out a bouquet of flowers. I chose my colors and they arranged a beautiful bouquet right there for me. Every time I pass by them in my living room, it puts a smile on my face because they are just so dang pretty! Plus, having fresh flowers always seems to brighten any room.

Being an October baby, there’s something about fall that makes me so happy. I’ve been counting down the days to a trip to the pumpkin patch—timed just right so that my carved pumpkins don’t start to wilt before Halloween gets here, but still early enough for there to be an ample selection of all the perfectly shaped and colored pumpkins I can pile into my wheelbarrow. Blake and I went down to Spooner Farms to gather my collection—he didn’t even protest when I made us go back to pick out “just one more” pumpkin after we had already started wheeling my harvest back to the truck.

For lunch, we gorged ourselves—not an exaggeration—on all-you-can-eat sushi. Because wow, I could eat sushi everyday.

After recovering from our food comas we met up with Christina and Elliott to spend the evening re-living our glory days/nights in Seattle. We made our way through Capital Hill, with stops at Barca, Grimm’s, and Rhino Room for some dancing.

All in all, I’d say 27’s lookin’ pretty nice so far.
