On this edition of me being so specific about the furniture that I want that I just end up DIY-ing it, I’m going to show you how I made this simple TV stand.

Here’s the space I was working with. I clearly very desperately needed to replace my plastic tub with a real tv stand. I really liked the look of a lot of mid-century modern pieces that I was finding. The problem was that when I first moved in, I didn’t have much furniture, so I had to budget for the most important things first and ended up not wanting to spend a ton on a tv stand.

Luckily I had this old IKEA Kaxas TV Stand that I’ve had since the beginning of undergrad. I had tucked it away in storage because I don’t really love the look of it. All my furniture used to be dark, which has obviously changed a lot, and now my house has a very light and airy aesthetic with lots of white, natural wood, and small black and gold accents here and there. So I decided I would take what I already had and try to revamp it to match my place a little better, and it turned out to be super easy!

The first thing I did was remove the two glass doors. I wasn’t crazy about the dark tinted glass, I might have kept them on if they were clear, but I saved the doors in case I decide to paint them in the future. I also unscrewed the metal leg base so that I wouldn’t have to worry about taping anything off.

The only things I used for this little update project were two colors of spray paint—Rustoleum Universal Paint & Primer In One in Flat White and Krylon Short Cuts Metallic Paint in Gold Leaf. I picked both of these up at a local craft store.

I went with the flat white for the body of the tv stand, using multiple coats of spray paint to cover the original gray color. For the legs, I used the metallic spray paint, taking them from silver to gold. After cleaning off all the surfaces, I evenly coated the body and legs of the stand, let them dry, and kept repeating until the original color wasn’t showing through. Then I flipped and coated the other sides until every angle was completely painted, including the inside of the tv stand.

After letting both of the pieces dry completely, all that was left to do was reassemble and move it back inside. Then of course, my favorite part—styling.

I barely had to do anything and kind of can’t believe that it’s even that same stand I’ve been hiding away for years. It makes the perfect addition to my living room and was just the right size for my little tv (that ones still in the works). So happy with the way it turned out!

Now onto the next project! 😊
